Busy Weekend, Bad Timing Lead to Charger Shutdowns

Sept. 10, 2020
A poorly-timed update caused delays for many Americans over Labor Day weekend.

Sept. 10, 2020—Electrify America, one of the nation's largest open DC Fast Charging networks, chose to upgrade a large portion of its chargers on one of the busiest travel weekends for Americans.

InsideEVs reports that Electrify America had shut down each of its charging stations from the middle of Virginia to southern South Carolina, spanning almost 500 miles of highway. Almost all electric vehicles, aside from Tesla, use Electrify America's charging network to fuel their cars.

The biggest issue for consumers was not the need for an update, but rather the timing of the update and no warning issued by the charging company.
