Sept. 14, 2020—Utah's Department of Transportation enters the second phase of a five-year $50 million project with Panasonic that aims to keep drivers safe and offer more accurate updates and warnings while they are behind the wheel.
The second phase will focus on sending drivers warnings about accidents and hazards detected by other vehicles. The "talking" cars will share data and information in an effort to keep more drivers safe on the road, reports StateScoop.
The first phase of the project deployed 69 data-collecting roadside devices along Utah's most treacherous corridors. The devices gathered data from fleet vehicles that had been outfitted with radios that report metrics such as tire traction levels, windshield wiper speeds, and acceleration and braking rates.
