Feb. 1, 2021—The Alabama Department of Commerce estimates that more than 6,000 new auto-related jobs in Alabama are expected following the completion of two major manufacturing plans, the Alabama Reporter reported.

A new Mazda Toyota plant in Huntsville and a Mercedes-Benz EV manufacturing operation in Tuscaloosa and Bibb counties are expected to be the main source of the growth, with both expected to open in the coming months.

“Vehicles have become Alabama’s chief export, with annual shipments to 90 nations around the world,” Economic developer Nicole Jones told the publication. “The automotive industry accounts for over 40,000 manufacturing jobs in our state. A business-friendly climate that includes a quality and skilled workforce, low taxes, competitive incentives and an excellent quality of life facilitate an environment conducive for business.”

Last year, the Alabama auto industry added 1,900 jobs and $1.1 billion in investment.
