First Affordable Care Act Deadline is Tuesday

Sept. 30, 2013

Sept. 30, 2013—In accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), all employers must notify their employees of the options offered by the new system of health insurance exchanges by Tuesday.

The requirement is for all businesses, regardless of size or current health insurance program.

The Oct. 1 deadline also marks the first official day the ACA is active, as health insurance exchanges around the country will begin accepting open enrollment. The coverage provided by the exchanges begins Jan. 1.

To meet the requirements of Tuesday’s deadline, employers must distribute notices to staff about the upcoming changes and offer guidance on where to look for more information. The U.S. Department of Labor has release_notesd example documents to help businesses craft their own notices.
