Biden Administration to Release EV Charging Guidelines

June 13, 2022

The federal standards will provide benchmarks for federally-funded charging stations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

June 13, 2022—The Biden Administration plans to release proposed standards for electric vehicle charging stations this week, reports the USA Today.

With its pledge to place 500,000 public charging stations for electric vehicles by 2030, the guidelines would require charging stations to be available every 50 miles along the interstate, no more than a mile off the highway, and maintain a minimum number of chargers capable of serving multiple customers. Stations would have to be free and open for public use with real-time pricing and locations visible on a GPS app similar to gas stations.

The Federal Highway Administration’s proposed standards would apply to federally-funded charging stations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico
