US Needs EV Charger Availability to Grow 8-Fold by 2023

Jan. 17, 2023

National charging availability is behind the pace of the market, which could slow EV adoption.

Jan. 17, 2023—A recent S&P Global Mobility study showed that EV adoption is closely tied to charging availability.

The study, as reported by Green Car Reports, said that public charging needs to “quadruple in size between 2022 and 2025 and grow more than eightfold by 2030” to be sustainable.

S&P Global Mobility estimates there are currently:

  • 126,500 Level 2 AC chargers
  • 20,431 DC fast chargers
  • 16,822 Tesla Superchargers

In 2022 the U.S. added about 54,000 Level 2 chargers and 10,000 DC fast chargers, said the report.

The findings add that the U.S. needs to have “700,000 Level 2 chargers and 70,000 DC fast chargers by 2025, 1.2 million Level 2 chargers and 109,000 DC fast chargers by 2027, and 2.1 million Level 2 chargers and 172,000 DC fast chargers by 2030.”
