Honda Issues "Do Not Drive" Warning for 8,200 U.S. Vehicles

Feb. 6, 2023

Unrepaired Takata air bag inflators have caused hundreds of injuries and dozens of deaths in the past decade.

Feb. 6, 2023–Honda has issued a “Do Not Drive” warning in the United States for 8,200 Acuras and Hondas with unrepaired Takata air bag inflators, Reuters reports.

The warning will affect “2001-2003 model year Honda Accord, Civic CR-V and Odyssey, Pilot and Acura 3.2CL and 3.2 TL” with the air bag inflators.

Takata air bag inflators have been recognized as a danger since 2009, with hundreds of injuries and more than 30 deaths worldwide (at least 23 of them confirmed to be in the U.S.) having been reported as a result of them since then.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Takata air bags were recalled due to “propellant that could break down after long-term exposure to high-temperature fluctuations and humidity.” The air bags “explode, unleashing potentially deadly metal shrapnel inside vehicles.”

More than 67 million Takata air bag inflators have been recalled in the United States in the last decade, and more than 100 million globally. Honda has made sweeping efforts to contact affected drivers and offers “free towing and loaner vehicles for the free recall repair.”

“We’re concerned for the safety of those who have not responded,” Honda said, “and are now adopting the new Stop Driving messaging to spur them to act.”
