Traffic Fatalities Fall in First Quarter of 2014

Aug. 19, 2014

Aug. 19, 2014—The number of traffic fatalities fell by almost 5 percent in the first three months of 2014 compared to the same time period last year, according to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The reduction in traffic fatalities this year marks the largest decrease since 2010.

The report also revealed that the number of vehicle miles traveled decreased by over 4 billion in that time frame when compared to the first quarter of 2013. The decrease represents a 0.6 percent decrease, year over year.

The data for the report was taken primarily from NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). FARS records all fatal crashes that involve a motor vehicle on a traffic way.
