Google, Apple Make Strides in Auto Industry

Dec. 31, 2013

Dec. 31, 2013—According to a Wall Street Journal report, Audi AG will announce a partnership with Google to develop in-car entertainment and information systems based on the tech giant’s software at next week’s International Consumer Electronics Show.

If announced, this wouldn’t be the first time Google has teamed up with an automaker. It was reported in August that Google has begun designing and developing a full-fledged self-driving car with Continental AG. And Audi, Toyota, and Tesla Motors are all already making use of Google’s Maps technology.

The Wall Street Journal also reported the use of Android as the technology of choice for Audi.

The report also states that Apple is teaming up with BMW to create smart dashboards featuring iOS, the same operating system used in Apple’s popular iPhones and iPads.

The Cupertino tech giant unveiled “iOS in the Car” at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June. According to reports, the platform will use the Siri voice application to run apps and software.
