March 31, 2014—Consumers are buying compact SUVs in increasing numbers, according to a recent analysis by J.D. Power & Associates.
The compact SUV segment has been the most popular segment among U.S. new-vehicle retail buyers in 2014, accounting for 17.4 percent of all new-vehicle sales.
This is an increase of three percent from the first quarter of 2013, when compact SUVs were only the third best-selling vehicle segment.
J.D. Power reported that compact SUV vehicles come in at a price premium, with the average transaction price in March coming in at $25,600, which is $6,200 higher than compact cars and $3,400 higher than midsize cars.
