March 2, 2015—Hyundai Corp. is recalling 204,768 Elantras due to a power steering defect that can cause the cars to revert to manual steering, according to a report from Reuters.
The recall affects four-door Elantra sedans produced from June 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010, and 2009-10 model Elantra Touring hatchbacks, according to a report filed by Hyundai on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.
It’s estimated that 3 percent of autos recalled are affected by the defect. Hyundai filed the recall even though the loss of power steering assist is technically not classified as a safety defect in the U.S. when manual steering is able to be maintained.
