May 19, 2014—Tesla Motors is now the biggest auto-industry employer in California, according to a recent Bloomberg report.
The automaker now employs more than 6,000 people in the state.
According to the report this moves Tesla well ahead of Toyota, which has 5,300 employees in California.
That gap is expected to widen, as Toyota plans to move its headquarters from Southern California to Texas in 2017.
A Tesla spokesperson said the company also plans to add at least 500 more worker’s by year’s end in California.
