Aug. 25, 2014—Japanese-branded automobile companies contribute to an estimated 1.36 million private sector U.S. jobs, according to recent data analyzed by a Rutgers University professor and commissioned by the Japan Automobile manufacturers Association (JAMA) USA.

The report, which uses 2013 data, highlights that Japanese companies' production and R&D facilities, as well as dealer networks, are helping to fuel the American workforce, with jobs increasing from 2012 to 2013.

The jobs breakdown includes:

  • Direct Japanese-branded automaker employment: 82,816 workers
  • Automakers manufacturing and suppliers: 224,000 jobs
  • Consumer spending from automaker and manufacturing: 393,000 jobs
  • Japanese-branded new vehicle dealers’ employment: 423,568 positions
  • Consumer spending from Japanese-branded dealer positions: 240,000 jobs

In all, the nearly 1.36 million jobs provided $85.1 billion in total compensation for workers, according to the report

“The figures in this latest employment report are a welcome sign for the manufacturing sector in America as well as for consumers looking for high-quality vehicles in the marketplace,” said Ron Bookbinder, general director of JAMA USA. “JAMA member companies are more American than ever and will continue to be a source of economic growth and high-quality jobs in America’s automotive sector both now and in the future.”
