EcoCAR 2 Contest Winners Announced

June 16, 2014

June 16, 2014—The U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors Co. announced Friday the winners of the EcoCAR 2: Plugging in to the Future finals.

The three-year competition for engineering students was managed by Argonne National Laboratory and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, GM and 30 other government and industry organizations. The goal was to improve the environmental impact and energy efficiency of a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.

The winning team from Ohio State University engineered their Malibu with energy storage, electric drive and with ethanol-fueled engine technology. The car reached 50 miles per gallon gas equivalent and used 315 Watt-hours per mile of electricity during testing for the competition.

"The EcoCAR 2 competition has been an incredible journey and learning experience for everyone at Ohio State, and that's what really matters – winning the top spot is just a bonus," said Katherine Bovee from Ohio State. "We are all excited to take everything we have learned into the workplace after graduation."
