Cruise, GM to Seek Approval for No Pedal, Steering Wheel in AV

Self-driving car maker Cruise and General Motors said they would seek U.S. regulatory approval in coming months to deploy a number of Cruise Origin vehicles without steering wheels or pedals.
Oct. 23, 2020—Self-driving car maker Cruise and General Motors Co are seeking U.S. regulatory approval to deploy a number of Cruise Origin vehicles without steering wheels or pedals, reports Reuters.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which spent 15 months reviewing a former GM petition to deploy a limited number of self-driving vehicles similar to the Chevrolet Bolt platform, said Wednesday it “will review the new petition when it is received.”
Cruise unveiled the Origin back in January. The Cruise Origin only has two long seats facing each other and can fit four passengers.
GM plans to begin building the Origin in Detroit in late 2021 or early 2022.
