June 15, 2018—German authorities imposed a fine of about $1.2 billion on Volkswagen Group, once again increasing the tab for the automaker's global emissions scandal, USA Today reports.
Prosecutors in Braunschweig, Germany, announced the penalty Wednesday in connection with their investigation into Volkswagen's intentional use of software to cheat emissions standards on nearly 11 million vehicles worldwide.
Volkswagen said it had agreed to accept the fine "and, by doing so, admits its responsibility."
The emissions cheating has cost the company at least $30 billion via numerous fines and settlements, including a sweeping deal with American consumers that involves vehicle buybacks or fixes for all affected owners.
