March 13, 2018—After reaching a record-breaking 53 million recalled cars in 2016, Michigan Live reported that auto recalls in the United States dipped to 30.7 million in 2017, which is the lowest figure since 2013.
Last year's figures were aided by the largest recall in U.S. automotive history in the Takata air bag recall that includes 19 different automakers recalling 69 million inflators across the 42 million vehicles.
In 2017, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports there were 813 recalls over the course of the year that resulted in the recall of 30,732,703 vehicles.
The drop from 2016 to 2017 comes after three consecutive years of nearly 50 million or more vehicles being recalled each year. From 1997 to 2013, the figures usually stuck between 10 and 30 million recalled vehicles each year until numbers really started to spike in 2014.
