March 18, 2013—The Tire Industry Association (TIA) testified in opposition of a proposed Maryland House bill regarding tire aging.
Delegate Benjamin F. Kramer introduced the bill to the Economic Matters Committee in the Maryland House of Delegates.
The bill would prohibit a merchant from selling a tire as a new tire if the tire is a retreaded, previously used or recycled tire or was manufactured more than a certain number of years before the date of sale to the consumer.
The bill would also require the merchant who sells the tire to provide a specified notice and disclosure to the consumer relating to tire age and safety.
The TIA, in conjunction with the Rubber Manufacturers Association, Chesapeake Automotive Business Association, the Washington, Maryland, Delaware Service Station and Automotive Repair Association, have formed a coalition that met in Annapolis, Md. to testify in opposition of the bill.
TIA Executive Vice President Roy Littlefield told lawmakers about TIA’s role in tire safety education, including the tire technician training program and online training program that has trained more than 80,000 tire technicians and 930 dealers.
