March 30, 2015—For the second year in a row, the U.S. auto industry surpassed greenhouse gas emissions standards in model year 2013 by a wide margin, the Environmental Protection Agency said on Thursday.
Overall industry compliance in model year 2013 was 1.4 miles per gallon better than the government requirement for that year.
“These findings are a terrific early success story for President Obama’s historic effort to reduce the pollution that contributes to climate change,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy in a news release accompanying the report’s release.
EPA said that fuel economy has increased in eight of the last nine years, average carbon dioxide emissions from cars and light trucks is at a record low and that there are more than three times as many 30 mpg vehicles than five years ago.
