July 12, 2018—Several industry trade associations representing car and parts manufacturers in North America are attempting to persuade their governments to renew negotiations regarding the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

“We believe now is the time for all parties to return to the negotiating table with a renewed commitment to the modernization of a cohesive, three-country NAFTA agreement," the groups from the U.S., Canada and Mexico said in a joint statement.

The groups issuing the statement included the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the American Automotive Policy Council, and the Association of Global Automakers, to name a few.

Since his decisive victory on July 1, Mexican President-elect Manuel Lopez Obrador has embraced NAFTA with vigor, and even reached out to U.S. President Donald Trump in a phone conversation that touched on economic development, according to a report by tirebusiness.com.
