Nov. 18, 2022—The Annual Auto Reliability Report from Consumer Reports suggests that hybrid cars and hybrid SUVs rank with some of highest predicted reliability for vehicles.
Hybrid cars and hybrid SUVs rank at first and third on the report, respectively. "Thirty-six percent of prospective buyers are considering one for their next car or truck purchase, up from 29 percent in 2019," according to Consumer Reports.
Jake Fisher, senior director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports, says that top-rated hybrids are attractive because they generally have good fuel economy and low maintenance costs. But some of these elements may differ depending on the automaker.
A key differentiating factor for hybrids is that they do not require the task of being plugged in to charge. Fisher suggests that hybrids could be a quality option for drivers who are interested in battling high gas prices. Hybrid technology can lead to higher prices, and the latest models could cost around $1,700 more. However, there is a flip side to this cost when it comes to fuel savings.
"According to CR’s independent testing, most hybrid SUVs get more than 35 mpg overall, and most hybrid sedans get more than 45 mpg overall," according to Consumer Reports.
