Oct. 3, 2022—New York state has announced that it plans to follow in California's footsteps and require all new vehicles sold in the state by 2035 to either be electric or plug-in electric hybrids.
According to Reuters, Gov. Kathy Hochul made the announcement on Thursday through a statement. Hochul shared that she has directed a state environmental agency to both propose and finalize rules for adopting California's plan. This plan implements zero-emission vehicle rules that begin in 2026 with the ultimate goal of phasing out ICE new vehicle sales by 2035.
Hochul said that she believes that sustained investments on both the state and federal level will push New York state into the EV transition. The state environmental agency will hold a public hearing prior to the rules being finalized.
