California Auto Shops Hit by Gas Thieves

Oct. 29, 2021

Several shops are reporting thieves have siphoned gasoline out of parked cars in their lot.

Oct. 29, 2021—Auto shops in Sacramento County's Arden-Arcade area say people are siphoning gasoline out of parked cars, KCRA reported.

It’s happened several times in the California area over the past month to multiple shop owners. The police do not believe the crimes to be organized.

Jeremiah Bethly, owner of 1st Choice Auto Repair, said its happened multiple times this month just at his shop. He’s seen people approaching cars with gas canisters and gas caps left open at different hours of the day.

Julio Rodriguez of Rodriguez Custom Upholstery also saw signs of siphoning. He said he saw a tube used to siphon and one in a tank Wednesday morning.

"It's dumbfounding to me why people would come along and try and siphon gas out of vehicles," Bethly told the outlet, later adding, "I'm just losing more and more money.”
