Sept. 23, 2021—Indiana and Michigan are pursuing the first wireless charging infrastructure on a public road anywhere in the country.
According to a Detroit Free Press report, a one-mile stretch of road in Michigan somewhere in Wayne, Oakland or Macomb counties will be picked to host the Inductive Vehicle Charging Pilot. The Michigan Department of Transportation is planning to issue a request for proposal on Sept. 28. It's not clear how the technology would work, how soon the pilot project would be operational or how much it might cost, although this type of advance has been discussed by experts as one possible future for EV charging and testing has been tried in Europe.
The Indiana project would use magnetizable concrete to enable wireless charging of electric vehicles, according to an Indiana Department of Transportation news release. Testing is expected to commence on public roads in Indiana within the next one to two years.
