May 11, 2021—Researchers from Cornell are working on a solution that would allow EV owners to charge their vehicles while driving on the highway.
A Business Insider report details the research, which has been in the works for seven years and is still likely five to 10 years away from being rolled out on major roadways.
"Highways would have a charging lane, sort of like a high occupancy lane," Khurram Afridi, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Cornell, told the publication. "If you were running out of battery you would move into the charging lane. It would be able to identify which car went into the lane and it would later send you a bill."
Afridi sees wireless charging as the best way to eliminate a driver's fears related to finding charging stations and running out of battery.
