SURVEY: Pandemic Shifts EV Adoption Trends

Jan. 13, 2021

A new report finds that consumers are choosing internal combustion engines over electric vehicles.

Jan. 13, 2021—According to a recent report from Deloitte, many consumers currently favor internal combustion engines (ICEs) over electric vehicles (EVs).

The company's 2021 Global Automotive Consumer Study found that uncertainty and financial concerns fueled by the pandemic are two factors causing a near-term reluctance in switching away from ICEs and embracing alternative engine solutions.

According to the report 74 percent of U.S. consumers are currently looking for a traditional internal combustion engine in their next vehicle. With just 26 percent of U.S. consumers are considering alternative engine solutions, current interest in the sector has decreased by 15 percent in year-over-year research.

Research found the top concern in using EVs for U.S. consumers was battery range, with 64 percent of U.S. consumers also noting concern about the possibility of hacking as modern vehicles become increasingly connected.
