TIA Calls on Congress, National Highway Traffic Administration to Support Meaningful Tire Recall Reform

July 22, 2015

July 22, 2015—On Tuesday, the Tire Industry Association (TIA) and nonprofit advocacy organizations The Safety Institute and Families for Safer Recalls called on Congress and the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) to support meaningful tire recall reform.

The proposed safety bill, Senate Bill 1732,  includes a requirement for uniform electronic scan-ability of tires to ensure successful recall campaigns. In the current system, the Tire Identification Number (TIN) is manually transmitted to manufacturers. In the event of a recall, the tools are not currently available to quickly determine whether a tire is part of a recall.

A decision has not yet been reached on whether Senate Bill 1732 will pass.
