Dealership Mechanics Strike Enters Third Week

Aug. 16, 2021
There is progress being made towards a resolution, though organizers say major obstacles remain.

Aug. 16, 2021—The Illinois dealership mechanic strike has continued into its third week.

According to the Mechanics’ Local 701 website, the union representing the more than 800 mechanics, there is progress being made towards a resolution however “major obstacles remain.”

The New Car Dealership Commission (NCDC), which has been in talks with the union to negotiate a new contract, recently dropped the “most favored nations” clause in their proposal, a major fighting point from the union. The clause would’ve allowed NCDC pick and choose terms from other contracts that it sees as “more favorable.”

While that clause is dropped, the union is still fighting for higher pay and a raise in health and welfare rates.

The strike has affected 56 car dealerships and has caused some to shut down or severely limit their production.
