Biden Points to MN Mine for EV Nickel

April 13, 2022

Tamarack Mine could become a point of contention between the Biden Administration and Minnesota-based environmental advocates.

April 13, 2022—Could a northern Minnesota mine be tapped as a potential source for mining nickel for electric batteries? President Joe Biden thinks so.

Biden pointed to the Tamarack mine, 50 miles west of Duluth, as a key resource for domestic nickel to power electric vehicles. Tesla also plans to source 75,000 tons of nickel from the Minnesota mine over the next half-decade. Mining could begin as soon as 2026, according to reports from WTIP.

WaterLegacy, a water protection advocacy group, has expressed environmental concerns about mining and has urged the Biden Administration to look to recycling as a means to create EV batteries versus extraction.
