NYC Borough Sees 670% Catalytic Converter Theft Increase

Staten Island has experienced an increase of 670% in catalytic converter thefts, and the other boroughs in New York City are also seeing a substantial increase. 

Aug. 23, 2022—Catalytic converter thefts have gone up by 269% across New York City this year, and by 670% on Staten Island. 

According to the New York Post, 5,548 catalytic converter thefts have happened across the city since Aug. 14, 2022. This number is a tremendous increase when compared to thefts at this time last year, which totalled to 1,505 reports. 

In terms of Staten Island, New York, thefts have gone up to 362. The year before, these numbers sat at 47. This is the reason for the 670% increase. 

Here is data on the other boroughs of New York City, according to the New York Post: 

  • Queens has had 2,092 catalytic converter thefts in 2022 compared to 574 the year before. 
  • Brooklyn has had 1,534 thefts in 2022 compared to 403 in 2021.
  • The Bronx has had 976 thefts in 2022 compared to 286 the year before. 
  • Manhattan has had 584 thefts in 2022 compared to 195 in 2021.
