Middle America on EVs: ‘We'll Wait’

Nov. 22, 2022

EV sales are significantly lower in heartland states as compared to California.

Nov. 21, 2022—While California represents 15% of the electric vehicle market, 22 heartland states have a combined 15.5% of EV retail sales, says a report by S&P Global as cited by Green Car Reports

James Martin, associate director of consulting for S&P Global Mobility, says that while access to chargers is a factor, one of the primary reasons for hesitation in middle America is the lack of an affordable family EV crossover.

"There is no doubt that the lack of charger availability is an influence in Midwestern states, but it is not the factor,” James Martin, associate director of consulting for S&P Global Mobility, said in a statement. “An equally strong factor is the availability of product in form factors that customers are willing to purchase.
