Aug. 23, 2016—Mobileye, a leader in automotive computer vision systems, mapping, localization and machine learning, and Delphi Automotive announced Tuesday that they have partnered to develop a complete SAE Level 4/5 autonomous driving solution.

SAE Level 4 and 5 autonomous vehicles, labeled high automation and full automation respectively, require little or no human driver input.

The partnership between Mobileye and Delphi would result in a production-intent fully automated vehicle solution, widely applicable on diverse vehicle platforms. The two companies will demonstrate the solution in combined urban and highway driving at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The solution will be production ready by 2019.

"The Mobileye and Delphi relationship started in 2002 with the implementation of what was one of the most advanced active safety systems of the time. Our long history together is key to the success of this ambitious endeavor," said Amnon Shashua, Mobileye chairman and chief technology officer. "Our partnership with Delphi will accelerate the time to market and enable customers to adopt Level 4/5 automation without the need for huge capital investments, thereby creating a formidable advantage for them."

Mobileye previously supplied camera systems to Tesla as a part of its Autopilot system, however the company announced in July that it would will cease supplying Tesla and instead work with BMW and Intel to develop a fully autonomous vehicle by 2021

"This partnership will allow us to give our customers an increased level of automated capabilities faster and more cost effectively,” Kevin Clark, Delphi president and CEO, said. “The collective expertise of our two organizations will accelerate the creation of new approaches and capabilities that would likely not have been possible working alone. This is a win-win for both companies and our customers."

Each company will contribute key technologies to the autonomous solution. Mobileye will employ its systems for real time mapping and vehicle localization. Delphi will utilize its autonomous driving software algorithms with full camera, radar and LiDAR sensors. Both companies will also develop the next generation of sensor fusion technology and autonomous, human-like “driving policy.” This will allow the autonomous solution to learn and navigate the road with human drivers in complex scenarios.
