March 3, 2015—Cars or trucks subject to industry recalls would have to be repaired before the vehicles could be registered, complying with a new bill introduced in the U.S. Senate on Monday.
This is the latest response to the mass recalls prompted by defective airbag systems put out by parts manufacturer Takata, according to a report from Reuters.
The Repairing Every Car to Avoid Lost Lives, or RECALL Act—sponsored by Democratic Senators Edward Markey (Mass.) and Richard Blumenthal (Conn.)—is intended to address the millions of vehicles that are still not fixed despite the recalls.
If approved, the bill would force state authorities to notify vehicle owners of the necessary repairs when state registration and recall notices were sent out. Proper and adequate repairs would be required before a vehicle's registration could be approved or renewed.
