ASA Opposes Illinois House Bill 6169
March 8, 2016—The Automotive Service Association announced on Monday its opposition of an Illinois House bill that would require vehicle storage providers to send certified letters detailing their rates to vehicle lienholders before imposing fees.
HB 6169, introduced by Illinois State Rep. Ron Sandack (R-81), also would require that the lienholder has the opportunity to inspect the vehicle on the premises. The responsibility for identifying the leinholder would fall to the Illinois Secretary of State.
ASA believes that HB 6169 would create unnecessary paperwork and recordkeeping burdens, increasing cycle times for shops and failing to address the root of the problem, negligent vehicle owners. ASA also believes that state government infrastructure is not in place to perform the required duties.
ASA asked Illinois repair shops to go to ASA’s legislative website and select “Alerts” to send a letter to their state legislators regarding the issue.
