March 21, 2016—General Motors will offer a 10-speed transmission in eight models by 2018, according to a report from Automotive News.
GM global product chief Mark Reuss said the 2017 Camaro ZL1, a lightweight sport coupe, will be the first model to get the transmission.
Reuss said at a media event the rear-wheel-drive gearbox is designed for high-horsepower vehicles. A new 9-speed automatic gearbox was developed for front wheel drive vehicles. GM will still offer its 8-speed transmission in Cadillacs and Corvettes.
The two transmissions were developed in a joint-venture with Ford. The 10-speed will make its first appearance for Ford in the next-generation Raptor this fall.
GM invested $343 million retooling its plant in Romulus, Mich. to produce the new transmission.
