March 21, 2017—Waymo, Google’s self-driving car company, has hired a new head of public policy as autonomous vehicles make a push for commercial relevance, according to a report by USA Today.

Tekedra Mawakana is a former Yahoo and AOL employee who spent the last 14 months as head of Global Relations at Ebay. Her title at Waymo will be vice president of public policy and government affairs, according to USA Today

"While Waymo is perhaps best known for their innovative self-driving technology, I'm drawn to their strong commitment to safety and their thoughtful approach to shaping policies in this fast-evolving space," Mawakana said in a statement, according to the report.

This move by Waymo comes during a time where government officials are preparing for the arrival of autonomous vehicles.
