Auto Industry Predicts High Memorial Day Sales

May 24, 2013

May 24, 2013—New car sales are expected to hit 15 million this year, thanks to a strong surge in new-vehicle sales during Memorial Day Weekend, according to Kelley Blue Book.

This is an expected 6 percent year-over-year improvement and sales this month could be the strongest since January.

LMC Automotive even forecasts that new-vehicle sales could top 16 million for the first time since 2002.

Similar to previous years, Kelley Blue Book expects a strong surge in vehicle sales during Memorial Day weekend thanks to the discounts and incentives offered by manufacturers during this time.

The increase in sales are once again being driven by sales of pickup trucks, with sales of full-size pickup trucks and compact crossovers expected to increase 19.9 and 15.7 percent, respectively.

"The Big Three will continue to benefit from a strong pickup truck market, with each domestic automaker anticipated to post gains slightly better than the overall industry average," said Alec Gutierrez, senior market analyst of automotive insights for Kelley Blue Book.
