Sept. 25, 2018—Volkswagen recently revealed the platform that will underpin the brand’s upcoming electric vehicles. A report by autoindustriya.com noted that the platform is called the Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB), and serves as the foundation for the upcoming ID and other models.

The ID chassis is all new, and was not modified from any previous platform and was designed expressly for the use of an electric powertrain. Because the platform is modular, it can be used on a range of vehicles, from compacts to SUVs and vans. The chassis will also reportedly serve as a "technical matrix" for Volkswagen Group brands like Audi.

The upcoming ID will be the first of many forthcoming EVs from Volkswagen. Production of the EV hatchback is scheduled for 2019 with the car officially going on sale in 2020.
