Feb. 18, 2019—According to a report by WSFA12, a new scholarship will be awarded to 50 students who plan to pursue that career and work in the automotive industry.
Alabama is looking to fill automotive jobs as it's predicted that 10,000 positions will be available in the state in the next two years, according to WSFA12.
“There's a huge need, never seen before in our state, and these are great jobs,” JeffnL Lynn, vice chancellor of Workforce Development for the Alabama Community College System said to WSFA12. “We have so many automotive manufacturing company jobs in the state of Alabama, especially with the expansion of Mazda-Toyota in Huntsville area.”
The scholarship will help recruit students from Alabama develop a strong work force that can later be used back in the state, WSFA12 reports.
“These are great careers, where a student can come out of high school, take 2 years of education at one of our community colleges, and start with a salary of around $55,000 a year,” Lynn said to WSFA12. “The scholarship is really to enhance the opportunity for our students to get a great career in Alabama."
According to WSFA12, a total of $180,000 will be awarded to 50 students who are able to maintain a GPA of at least 2.5. Later, the scholarship money will go towards one of the 14 available automotive programs offered at community colleges across the state.
