April 17, 2019—Houston residents now can get groceries delivered to them by self-driving vehicles. According to KHOU-11, Kroger and Nuro have launched autonomous delivery to two zip codes in Houston.
KHOU-11 reports that Kroger and Nuro will utilize Nuro's manual and self-driving Toyota Prius fleet, and later this year will introduce Nuro's custom autonomous vehicle. The vehicles are equipped with cameras, a radar, and a LIDAR, according to KHOU-11.
The publication reports that the autonomous vehicle uses light waves to measure distance, and the companies will be taking notes and monitoring the systems throughout.
The cars have already made an appearance in Phoenix, KHOU-11 reports.
