ACA Responds to Alliance for Automotive Innovation Lawsuit

Auto manufacturers claim the Right to Repair will drive up manufacturers’ costs and threaten the privacy of car owners.

Nov. 24, 2020—The Auto Care Association (ACA) has issued a formal response to a lawsuit challenging this month's passing of the Right-to-Repair initiative in Massachusetts.

Last week, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade group for auto manufacturers, filed a lawsuit to challenge the initiative which was supported with 75 percent of the vote. In the lawsuit, auto manufacturers claim the change will drive up manufacturers’ costs and threaten the privacy of car owners by exposing their data.

“Over the last several years, the Auto Care Association has joined with cyber security experts to develop international standards that could be readily implemented and will permit the cyber-secure sharing of data. Further, we have offered to work with the manufacturers to adopt these standards in order to ensure competition for their customers," said ACA president and CEO Bill Hanvey in a press release. "However, instead of working to find common ground, the manufacturers have continued to engage in a scare campaign regarding access to wireless mechanical data, aimed first at voters and now the courts. Just like Massachusetts voters, we trust that the courts will see through the manufacturers’ scare tactics and will throw out this baseless lawsuit.”
