A recent report suggests the number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles sold worldwide should top 6,000 by year’s end.

Dec. 21, 2017—According to a recent report by market research company Information Trends, the number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles sold worldwide should top 6,000 by year’s end.

In the first nine months of 2017, approximately 2,400 hydrogen vehicles were sold.

According to the Information Trends report, by 2021, more automakers are expected to have hydrogen options available.

Half of all hydrogen vehicle sales have been in the U.S., though largely concentrated in California’s population centers.

Europe has a larger hydrogen refuelling infrastructure available, yet currently only accounts for about 10 percent of all such sales, with Japan and Korea accounting for nearly 40 percent of HV sales.

Currently, Toyota’s Mirai accounts for roughly 75 percent of all HV sales, while the Hyundai ix35 Tucson and Honda Clarity largely combine to account for the remaining HVs sold.
