Dec. 11, 2017—More than half of the approximately 42 million recalled air bag inflators produced by Takata Corp. have yet to be replaced, according to a Detroit News report

Manufacturers say they’re doing what they can to improve repair rates for the faulty air bags, which have been linked to 13 deaths in the U.S.

They claim they have enough replacement parts for the free repairs, and are even occasionally going door-to-door to track down vehicles that still require the repair.

However, some consumer safety advocates argue that OEMs should be doing even more to help vehicle owners understand the potential for danger.

The recall of the Takata Corp. air bags represents the largest automotive safety recall in U.S. history, and affects almost 13 percent of all registered vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says only 19.6 million of the 41.8 million air bags that were recalled by the end of October have been repaired.
