May 14, 2013—More than one third of Americans admit their cars may not be safe enough to drive on the road, according to a new survey conducted by CouponCodes4u.com.
The survey, which polled 2,724 Americans from across the country, found that of the 72 percent of respondents who said they owned a car, 35 percent said their car was not safe enough to drive on the road. An additional 18 percent admitted they were unsure, and 47 percent of drivers said they were certain their car was fit for driving.
Of those respondents who admitted that their car may be unsafe, 37 percent said their vehicle was unsafe because they could not afford to pay for car repairs. An additional 28 percent said that their car was damaged in a pervious accident, making it unsafe to drive, and 21 percent said they owned an old car.
When asked if they were worried about the possibility of their vehicle causing an accident, only 37 percent said they were worried.
All participants were asked whether or not they would be able to afford a new car if their current vehicle was declared unfit for driving; 71 percent said they would not be able to.
