Feb. 6, 2015—General Motors is planning on beginning construction on the Chevy Bolt, a $30,000 electric car with a 200-mile range that is expected to compete with Tesla’s Model 3, according to a report from Reuters.
The Bolt was unveiled at the Detroit Car Show last month, and roughly 30,000 units are expected to roll out in the cars first year of production. The car will be manufactured in a plant outside of the Detroit area.
The first car is expected to roll out in early 2017, the same time Tesla has said it plans to offer its take on a more affordable electric vehicle on a large scale.
The Bolt is an all-electric take on Chevy’s Volt, a hybrid electric vehicle with a small gas tank. Priced at $35,000, over 18,000 Volts were sold in 2014.
