Aug. 20, 2013—AAA Travel projects 34.1 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the upcoming Labor Day weekend, the largest number of travelers over the holiday weekend since the recession began.
The projection is up 4.2 percent from 2012’s 32.7 million travelers. The anticipated increase is due to boosted consumer spending and the improving housing market.
For many Americans, their home is also their biggest asset, as home prices improve in many parts of the country more families are feeling comfortable about traveling this Labor Day holiday," said Robert Darbelnet, AAA president and CEO.
Eighty-five percent, or 29.2 million, of the weekend’s travelers are expected to commute via automobile, up from 28 million last year. The average traveler is expected to travel a round-trip distance of 594 miles and spend $804.
