Reports: Aluminum Ford F-150 to Debut at Detroit Auto Show

Dec. 26, 2013

Dec. 26, 2013—According to multiple reports, Ford Motor Company will showcase its new aluminum F-150 at next month’s Detroit auto show, debuting a dramatic new approach to the popular pickup line.

The vehicle has been the source of much discussion over the past year, and a Ford spokesperson told FenderBender during November’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas that the company planned to debut the pickup in January, most likely at the North American International Auto Show at the COBO Center in Detroit.

Now, a report from Automotive News on Monday said sources have revealed the plans to unveil the new F series redesign at the Detroit show, which runs Jan. 13-26.

According to Automotive News, Alcoa Inc. is contributing to the new truck’s design with its expertise in creating military-grade metal.

With aluminum the metal of choice, hundreds of pounds are expected to be removed from the new truck model, making it able to comply with the new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel economy standards beginning in 2016.

The report in Automotive News said the move to aluminum could give the upcoming F-150 a 30-miles-per-gallon highway rating.

Those interested in the redesign of the F series, the best-selling truck line in the U.S. for the past 37 years, can expect more details during Ford’s Jan. 13 press conference at the Detroit show.
