Lawyers Allege Bosch Involved in VW Diesel Scandal

Aug. 19, 2016

Aug 19, 2016—Lawyers for U.S. Volkswagen diesel owners said Robert Bosch GmbH was an active participant in the development and implementation of the emissions cheating software, according to a report from Reuters.

To make the new allegations, lawyers in a San Francisco U.S. District Court filing on Tuesday cited confidential documents that were turned over by VW to plaintiffs attorneys.

"Bosch played a crucial role in the fraudulent enterprise and profited handsomely from it," the court filing said.

Most of the allegations remain under seal because the documents have been marked as confidential by VW. Bosch is taking the allegations seriously, a spokeswoman said, and VW declined to comment other than to say the allegations have no effect on its diesel scandal settlement.

Bosch makes an engine control unit that is highly customizable and used by several automakers including VW. Bosch supplied the components and software, but has said that the responsibility of how that software is used is up to automakers, according to the report.
