Feb. 8, 2016—Continental AG has announced the recall of 5 million airbag control units globally to replace corroded semiconductors that could prevent airbags from functioning properly, according to a report by Automotive News.
The defect hasn’t been linked to any fatal accidents, and a fix has been found.
Due to the large amount of vehicles that are being recalled, six of Continental's customers—Volvo Trucks, Volkswagen, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Fiat Chrysler and Honda—have been told they may have to prioritize repairs by starting with vehicles whose airbag warning lights have come on, said Amit Kapoor, the North American chief of Continental’s passive safety and sensorics units, according to the report.
Continental has told U.S. regulators that production is being ramped up and that it will have enough modules to repair the 2 million vehicles in the U.S. sometime this fall, according to Automotive News.
