Aug. 20, 2015—General Motors announced on Wednesday its plans to keep an Oshawa, Ontario, assembly line operating until 2017, according to a report by Reuters.
This announcement extends the life of a line that has been scheduled for closure over the last decade.
GM said it would invest $9.1 million to increase the production of Chevrolet Equinox and make related changes at the CAMI assembly, extending the production on the consolidated line to 2017.
GM first announced closure of the consolidated line in 2005. The company then announced that production would be ceased in 2008, but GM moved the date. It was also set to close in 2013 and more recently, 2016.
The consolidated line also produces the Chevrolet Impala. The flex line, GM’s other Oshawa line, produces the current Impala, Buick Regal, Chevrolet Camaro and Cadillac XTS.
"This new investment represents a very effective way for us to meet strong demand for the Chevrolet Equinox and it's positive news for our community," said Steve Carlisle, president of GM Canada, in a release, according to Reuters.
